Deacons

It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.

Our Deacons are actively involved in this ministry. They see to Member Care through monthly or more visits to shut-ins and weekly visits to hospitalized members. They deliver Easter Lilies and Christmas Poinsettias to shut-ins. They provide meals to families following the loss of a loved one or the birth of a child. If a member cannot provide food for themselves immediately upon release from the hospital, the Deacons will see that a meal is delivered to their home. Notes and cards are mailed as needed upon hospitalization, illness, crisis or other occasions. They send packages to young people in college or serving overseas in the military at least three times a year. At Thanksgiving they gather and package food and deliver these to members of our community. Through the Angel Tree and the Cozy Tree ministry,  gifts and warm hats and gloves are provided to needy children through the schools during the Christmas season. The Deacons have a long time relationship with the patients and staff at the U of I Bone Marrow Unit and provide and deliver Christmas cookies and gifts during the month of December. The Deacons tape sermons and deliver those tapes to members unable to attend church. They provide the funds for monthly birthday parties at Hope Haven, our local housing and workshop for adults with special needs. They collect and deliver needed goods to the area's homeless shelter and its community center. Deacons visit families following the birth of a child taking  a blanket and a book to the newest member of our church's family.

The Deacons meet once a month every month except July.  Officers include a moderator, vice moderator, and secretary. The church's Parish Nurse also attends these meetings to share in the needs of the congregation.

Worship Committee

There are many thing that occur through the year to ensure that each worship service is meaningful to those who worship at First Presbyterian Church.  The Worship Committee's responsibilities include preparations concerning communion services; care of worship paraments and supplies; work in cooperation with the pastor in the planning of seasonal and special worship services; work with the organist, hand bell directors, and the choir director to provide the support necessary for the music program at the church; arrange for pulpit supply in the absence of the pastor; be in charge of the floral displays in the sanctuary; and to provide a wedding coordinator. The Worship Committee welcomes comments and helpful input from the congregation.
