The purpose of the Worship Committee at First Presbyterian Church is to oversee all areas of worship and to engage and ensure a meaningful experience for all members of the congregation.
Throughout the year we also schedule liturgists and communion servers, set up communion and arrange for pastor supply. 2012 saw membership changes within the worship team. Terri joined the team in January, replacing Marcia, who left to head the Gifts and Memorials Committee. In June, Pat's term as moderator ended and Marilyn N. stepped into the position. Other current members are Carol, Eva, Rev. Deb, Randy and Ken.
The first quarter of the year found the committee busy setting up special services for spring and early summer. The last Sunday in February we celebrated the Gifts of Women in our church. Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday services were planned, including the play "The Upper Room". Because of overwhelming response to the 2010 Lenten study and meal, we offered a similar program during the five Wednesdays of the 2011 season. The theme was a DVD presentation entitled " The Last Days of Jesus", again preceded by a meal.
During May and June the committee concentrated on redistributing some of the job responsibilities from the moderator to committee members. We discussed and set up guidelines for announcements. In June we celebrated Pentecost and also had a Sunday in the Park service. During July we took advantage of having an open pulpit to highlight different aspects of Missions with which the youth of our church are involved. This included the Mission trip, Kids Against Hunger and serving at the Salvation Army.
Starting in the fall, the worship team took over the responsibility of integrating special music throughout the calendar year. A special service was planned for September 11, the tenth anniversary of 9-11. Patriotic music as well as hymns was reminding us that God is still in charge. September 18th we kicked off the year, using a football theme. In November, the veterans in our church participated in the service as well as performing as a "choir." We were then busy getting ready for Advent, including a Fellowship Hour after the Christmas Eve Service.
